Our preventive treatments

Comprehensive exams

We take 60 minutes with each new patient, performing a detailed exam that includes digital x-rays, intraoral scans, full periodontal charting, and a set of photos. You’ll leave with a complete understanding of your oral health and a care plan that’s tailored just for you.

Dental cleanings

Our hygienists take a gentle, thorough approach to cleanings, removing plaque and tartar while helping you maintain healthy habits at home. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, we always take the time to educate and encourage.

Oral cancer screenings

As part of every routine exam, we check for early signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities. It’s quick, painless, and can be lifesaving.

Bristle Saliva Test

Discover the root cause of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath with a simple, at-home saliva test. Bristle analyzes the bacteria in your mouth and delivers a personalized care plan—so you can take targeted steps toward a healthier smile.

Periodontal care

If you’re dealing with gum disease, we offer scaling and root planing to remove bacteria below the gumline and give your mouth a fresh start. Our team will walk you through every step and support your healing with consistent follow-ups.

Fluoride treatments

We offer professional fluoride applications to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities—especially helpful for patients prone to decay or with sensitive teeth.

Night guards

If you wake up with jaw tension, headaches, or worn-down teeth, you might be grinding or clenching in your sleep. Our custom night guards are designed to protect your smile and give your jaw muscles a well-deserved break.

We treat your bite to protect your smile

At Downtown Oakland Dental, we don’t just look at your teeth—we look at how they function together. Bite issues can lead to gum recession, worn-down teeth, sensitivity, and more. That’s why we factor alignment and jaw balance into every treatment plan.

  • Prevent long-term damage like fractures and tooth wear
  • Address the root cause of recession and sensitivity
  • Explore Invisalign® as a preventive, not just cosmetic, option

The preventive treatment process

Step 1

Start with a comprehensive first visit

Your first visit with us lasts about 90 minutes—because we believe in doing things thoroughly and thoughtfully. During that time, we’ll get to know your medical history, lifestyle, and goals, and take detailed records using photos, scans, and x-rays. It’s the foundation for personalized care that’s built to last.

Step 2

Review and plan together

Your doctor will examine your teeth, gums, and bite, then walk you through their findings. We’ll talk through any concerns and collaborate on a plan that feels right for you.

Step 3

Complete your cleaning

If no periodontal disease is present, your hygienist will gently clean your teeth, removing buildup and polishing your smile.

Step 4

Keep it consistent

Most patients benefit from visits every 6 months, though we may recommend more frequent appointments based on your needs. We’ll keep your care on track and easy to manage.

Frequently Asked Questions

We typically recommend visiting every 6 months for preventive care. If you’re managing gum disease or other oral health concerns, we may suggest more frequent cleanings to keep things stable and healthy.

Yes, you can! We’re proud to be a family-friendly practice and welcome patients of all ages. Whether it’s your child’s first visit or a routine checkup for the whole family, we’re here to provide thoughtful, personalized care in a space that feels warm, welcoming, and easy for everyone.

A regular cleaning is designed to remove plaque and tartar from above the gumline to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, goes below the gumline to remove bacteria and buildup from periodontal pockets. It's typically recommended when there are signs of gum disease to help restore gum health and prevent progression.

Our new patient visits are more comprehensive than most. You’ll get a full 90 minutes with the doctor, a detailed exam, intraoral photos, and a care plan designed around your specific needs and goals—not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Yes! Professional fluoride treatments can strengthen your enamel in ways over-the-counter products can’t. They’re especially helpful for patients with sensitivity, frequent cavities, or a history of dental work.
